Skansen

December 11, 2010

We are all going on a super outing. We are going to Skansen. Skansen was the 1st open air museum to open in the world in 1891! It is a restored Swedish Village and also has a zoo. It is on the Island of Djurgarden and covers 75 acres. In December they have the Christmas Market and Lucia Program. You can dance to traditional Swedish Music and there are lots of booths and gift shops.

Neal and I are in front of the mission home ready to go to Skansen. The other photo is of us on their front lawn looking towards the neighborhood.

This was a food booth that sold Korv (that would be hot dogs) soups, drinks and cookies.

The glass blower was amazing. There was a gift shop where you could buy what he made.

We all got a kick out of this. It is a mobile ATM. So we had all the men stand by it.

I love this photo. The dad was walking along and his son was too slow so he just grabbed him by the pants and away they went and everyone was happy as a lark.

Even though it was cold we sure had fun the performers were singing and playing all the songs that I was familiar with from my mom’s Swedish Lodge.

They had a big Christmas tree and we all danced around it as they sang the folk songs and did all the motions that went with them. Sister Rasmussen is in the blue coat 4 people behind me.

There were lots to see and we saw buggy rides, Dalmar horses and the May Pole.

Runestones: Letters written in Stone. Literally hundreds of these stones can be found in many places in Sweden. The letters are carved into the stone. Somebody did want us to read and remember a person or an event. The use of Runes started about 2000 years ago.

Each home in the village had a theme. This one was all about music and the fiddlers were amazing.

We wanted to see the Lucia Program and we got there early to get a good seat. Again this was an old church but had beautiful paintings on the ceilings and all around the insides of the church. The Priest came out and visited with several people he was very friendly and nice.

I was very surprised that not just the Lucia wore a red sash but her whole court did. At my moms lodge only the Lucia wore the red sash and the court wore silver sashes. The Lucia had a crown of lighted candles on her head. Wow we use battery ones!! I was told that the Lucia will wear a cap under the crown to catch as much candle wax as possible but still she gets a lot of wax in her hair!! The Lucia and her court and star boys sing all the songs. They have a choir director and they are amazing. We also went to a Lucia Program at the Dom Church in Lund and it was the same. The court was an amazing choir of young people boys and girls. You have to try out for the choir it is a big thing and quite an honor to be in it.

We wanted to see the animals so we broke away from our group and went and saw the moose. They were quite a sight to see. There were about 6 of them.

Well we sure had a great time I even was able to buy the mold for the crown at Skansen so we were happy about that. It is sad to have the weekend end as we had so much fun.

We were able to ride the train back with our friends the Rasmussens. We were so surprised that they put us on the deluxe train called the Veolia Transport. It was very deluxe!! Neal was like a kid in the candy store checking out each car and all the details of the whole train. Us girls just sat and ate and chatted!! Oh what fun!
